Wide-margin Down Royal winner bids to enhance trainer's fine record at Listowel - punting pointers for Tuesday

Punting pointers from Tuesday's race meetings . . .

Beverley: Clarendon House head-scratcher

An aversion to starting stalls has seen a brilliant season for Clarendon House hit the buffers, but connections hope the issue has been resolved when he lines up in the £20,000 conditions stakes (3.20).

The Robert Cowell-trained six-year-old has won at York's Dante meeting and at Listed level in Ireland this year, but has also compromised his chance at the start in four of his last five races.

No stone has been left unturned, with Gary Witheford's team providing stalls training and a visor going on for the first time after cheekpieces failed to work in last month's Nunthorpe.

Tim Palin, director of owners Middleham Park Racing, said: "We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Withefords as they've been working with him for the last fortnight. They think they have a system in place with the visor on which will see him jump on terms.

"Emaraaty Ana is the worthy favourite, but make no mistake he's got a proper chance if breaking on terms."

The race features the return of King Of Stars, who has been off the track after suffering a knee injury in Bahrain in December 2022.

Trainer Mick Appleby said: "He seems in good order but might just need the run. Hopefully, the rain stays away – that's the main thing."

Beverley: trainer to note

Julie Camacho has a 33 per cent strike-rate (5-15) at Beverley this year for a £1 level-stake profit of £36.25. She saddles newcomer Fair Call (2.45) and the four-timer seeking Captain Corelli (4.30).

Fontwell: Bowen bids to end lean spell

The core part of the jumps season is fast approaching and after a blistering start Sean Bowen leads the way in the race to become champion jockey, a season on from finishing second to Harry Cobden.

However, he leads Harry Skelton by just one (47-46) having had a fairly quiet time of things lately, with the Welshman's last winner coming on September 11.

Bowen has six chances at the Sussex track, including last-time-out winner Prince Imperial in the 2m5½f novice hurdle (1.20), and the in-form Lady Harriett for father Peter and brother Michael in the 3m2f handicap hurdle (3.40).

Listowel: Sir Jeremy bids to follow up Down Royal romp

There won't have been many easier nursery winners than Sir Jeremy at Down Royal just under three weeks ago. The two-year-old barely broke sweat in scoring by five and a half lengths and should have leading claims for Ado McGuinness in the valuable mile rated race (4.20).

After three reasonable runs in maidens he made a mockery of a mark of 67 on his handicap debut and was handed a 13lb rise as a result. This is a much stiffer task against higher-ranked rivals, albeit he is getting weight off them.

One of those is his 88-rated stablemate No Return, who finished third in a Tipperary maiden this month. McGuinness is a trainer to keep an eye on throughout the harvest festival as his runners can pop up at big prices. He had a Flat strike-rate of 12 per cent before the action got under way at Listowel on Sunday, but his runners show a level-stake profit of €97.83.

Newcastle: Balqaa bids for September hat-trick

With two victories already this month, Balqaa has finally got the reward her consistency deserves – and she might not be finished yet.

The Stella Barclay-trained mare could not be in better form heading into the mile handicap (8.00) following a win at Southwell at the start of the month and last week's course-and-distance success.

The 2,000gns purchase has a 5lb penalty to contend with on her 21st start at Newcastle, but she defied this mark over this track and trip at the start of 2022 for her previous yard.

Balqaa has been on the go since the start of the year, with this her 14th outing of 2024. The six-year-old has held her form well having registered four placed efforts before her recent back-to-back victories.

Warwick: McConnell breaks new ground

Irish trainer John McConnell, who has an impressive 22.8 per cent strike-rate over jumps in Britain, is set to have his first runner at Warwick when Yokkell lines up in the 2m novice hurdle (2.20).

The five-year-old ran out a 19-length winner when making her hurdles debut at Down Royal last month under Alex Harvey, with the 5lb claimer maintaining the partnership on his first ride at the Midlands track.

The 117-rated Dodger Long and Latenightrumble, who was last seen finishing second over 3m2f at Cheltenham's hunter chase night, will provide stiff opposition.
