A trainer striking out on his own and a smart mare in search of a first chase success - Thursday's punting pointers
Punting pointers from each of today's race meetings . . .
Chelmsford: Rajeko in calmer waters
A Chelmsford novice probably isn't the most likely place to find a potential form boost for next year's 2,000 Guineas favourite, but Rajeko could do just that for his Acomb conqueror The Lion In Winter in the mile event (5.40).
The juvenile made an instant impact when winning a Windsor novice on his debut and that form has worked out superbly, with the next four home all having won since.
He then ran to a Racing Post Rating of 93 when beaten just three lengths in the Group 2 July Stakes by Whistlejacket, who subsequently won the Group 1 Prix Morny, while he was just half a length behind Aomori City, who struck in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes next time.
Rajeko was a touch disappointing in the Acomb when last seen, but he's the highest rated in the field and looks the one to beat back in calmer waters.
Chelmsford stat: profitable course trainer to note
A £1 stake on each of Murty McGrath's five runners in three-year-old-plus handicaps at the track in the last five seasons would have yielded a profit of £40.50. He runs Ballybaymoonshiner (8.10).
Exeter: Daly hoping Party can give him reason to celebrate
The novice chase (12.45) has been won by some useful mares such as Bitofapuzzle, Midnight Tune and Momella in recent years and Henry Daly could add to that list with Party Vibes.
Winner of two of her six hurdles starts, the six-year-old ran a cracker in Listed company on her first start over fences, finishing third behind the race-fit Shecouldbeanything, who was completing a four-timer, and Grade 2-winning hurdler You Wear It Well.
Daly said: "It was a good race, so hopefully we can repeat the same sort of form. As long as she jumps round, she should have a chance.
"I don't know why but those horses by Mahler seem to like chasing. I have an idea of where I'd like her to go this season, but it depends on how things go."
The same card will also feature the return from injury of Daryl Jacob, who partners the well-fancied Issam in the 2m2½f handicap hurdle (2.30).
Ffos Las: De Boinville deputises
Nico de Boinville is operating at a 40 per cent strike-rate when riding for Paul Nicholls and gets the chance to improve on that good record with two mounts at the Welsh venue.
De Boinville, who rode a double on his first rides for the Ditcheat trainer at Stratford in July, partners Jakar Du Moulin in the 2m4f novice hurdle (2.42) and Gillespie in the closing bumper (3.50).
Jakar Du Moulin was bought for £175,000 after winning an Irish point and could be up to winning on his second start, having run well before tiring when second to the well-regarded Woodland Park, trained by Olly Murphy, on his hurdling debut last month.
Gillespie, a brother to the useful The Big Breakaway and a half-brother to Kildisart, has had wind surgery and is fitted with a tongue-tie on his debut.
Ffos Las stat: strong bumper record
Tom George has a 100 per cent strike-rate (2-2) in bumpers at this track in the last five seasons. He looks to maintain that record with Three Pikes (3.50).
Southwell: first runner
Michael Keady will saddle his first runner on a solo licence when Currumbin lines up in the 1m6f handicap (1.10).
Keady, who had a stint training alongside Mike Murphy in Bedfordshire, has 36 horses, the majority of whom are either yearlings or all-weather types.
"I trained him previously and I'm looking forward to seeing him run," the trainer said. "We were balloted out of the 1m3f race, which was our first preference, so we've been forced to step him up in trip.
"We'll see whether he stays, but he's got a good jockey on in Kieran Shoemark and I can see him travelling around well. If he's got the stamina to see the trip out he should be thereabouts."
Keady added of his operation: "I've got good support from my owners. It's always been a dream of mine to come to Newmarket because I'd go racing here as a boy. You could say I'm living the dream."
