A Charles Byrnes handicap snip, the royal runner bidding for a hat-trick and Quevega's daughter makes her return - punting pointers for Sunday

Punting pointers from some of today's race meetings . . .

Galway: Byrnes out to exploit lower chase mark with Aodhan May

Many eyes will be on the Charles Byrnes-trained Aodhan May in the 2m6½f handicap chase (2.35) as she tries to capitalise on a chase mark that is 35lb lower than her hurdles rating.

Byrnes is renowned for landing a gamble and this mare was in great form in the spring, recording figures of 11121 over hurdles from February to April. She also boasts winning chase experience, having scored off 86 at Wexford in March last year.

The trainer had a winner at Limerick last Saturday when Redcliff Glen struck at 40-1. Like him Aodhan May will run in the green-and-white diamond silks of the trainer's wife Cora Byrnes and will be ridden by their son Philip.

The mare was a 4-1 shot with bet365 on Saturday.

Wincanton: royal runner Reach For The Moon in hat-trick bid

Reach For The Moon won the 2021 Solario Stakes and was at one time considered a Derby prospect, but finds himself in very different circumstances three years on.

Owned by the Queen, he has embarked on a hurdling career with Jamie Snowden after leaving John and Thady Gosden last September.

He didn't take like a duck to water in his new job, finishing a well-beaten fourth on his first two attempts at Sedgefield and Worcester before being carried out at Stratford in July, but has bucked up his ideas recently.

He won easily at Worcester and showed he had courage to match his class this month when fending off King William Rufus at Fontwell. He has been handed a mark of 114 for this 1m7f handicap hurdle (1.02) – his debut in this sphere – and Will Featherstone will take off 10lb.

"He didn't have a huge amount of luck to start with but things seem to have picked up," Snowden said. "I planned on going to the Grade 2 contest at Cheltenham on Friday but the handicapper has given us a mark of 114, which looks like the right opening for him.

"We'll take it one step at a time but we hope he'll progress in handicap company. He showed plenty of resolve to get there last time under a penalty and looks like he's going the right way."

Wincanton: trainer to watch

Heather Main doesn't have many runners over jumps but is worth watching when she does.

She boasts a 1-4 (25 per cent) record at this track in the past five seasons and is represented by Numitor in the 2m4f veterans' handicap chase (2.42). The grey won a valuable veterans' prize at Haydock last season, so there is still life in his legs yet.

Main has showcased her excellent recent form with winners at 5-2, 66-1 and 3-1 – the latter two came at Wolverhampton on Friday evening.

Wexford: Quevega's daughter Aurora goes for another win

Aurora Vega is royalty in racing terms as she is out of the celebrated mare Quevega, making her a sibling to Grade 1 winner Facile Vega and winners Cameletta Vega and Princess Vega.

The Hammer and Trowel Syndicate's six-year-old will bid to improve her record to five wins from seven starts in the 2m4f mares' hurdle (3.25).

She showed both her talent and relative inexperience in a wide-margin win at Cork in August and looks set to improve on that effort now she goes up three furlongs in trip.

Aurora Vega should be difficult to beat for Willie Mullins, who won this race in 2017 and 2018.

Wexford: purchase pointer

Gigginstown House Stud shelled out £330,000 for point-to-point winner Working Away at the Cheltenham Tattersalls sale in November 2022. She makes her rules debut in the 2m mares' bumper (4.33).
