3.35 Beverley
Eddie And Violet Smith Conditions Stakes | 5f | 3yo+ | RTV

Why is it interesting?

This contest has been won by some classy sorts, including Alpha Delphini (2017) and the popular Kingsgate Native (2014), who both feature on the honour roll for the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.

The remarkably durable Duke Of Firenze performed with enormous credit when third behind Equilateral in the Listed Scarbrough Stakes at Doncaster this month and the ten-year-old bids to register a tenth career success.

At the other end of the age scale, the three-year-old Amplify finds himself in calmer waters after running in big-field handicaps at York and Ascot recently.

James Tate's Kyllang Rock, the winner of a similar contest at Nottingham last month, is reopposed by course-and-distance scorer Tarboosh, who was five lengths adrift when fifth at the Midlands track.

Paul Midgley has won this contest twice in the last eight years, most recently with the useful Orvar last year, and is represented by Tarboosh.

What do the stats say?

There have been four winning favourites of this race in the last ten years, the most recent being Alpha Delphini in 2017. The biggest-priced winner was Caspian Prince (2016) at 33-1.

The last three-year-old to win this 5f event was Rocky Ground in 2011. Since then the older horses have dominated, with the nine-year-old Kingsgate Native landing top honours in 2014.

Danny Tudhope, who will partner Kyllang Rock, has been operating at an impressive strike-rate of 24 per cent this season. Ben Curtis, with a strike-rate of 18 per cent, is also having a good season.

What do the trainers say?

David Griffiths, trainer of Duke Of Firenze
He ran a cracker in a Listed race at Doncaster last time, where he was perhaps a little unlucky. It doesn't look the strongest of conditions races, we've got a good draw and hopefully we can go a couple better than last time.

James Tate, trainer of Kyllang Rock
He's in good form and pretty much usually performs on soft ground – the more rain the better. Beverley has had some rain and are forecast more, so we're looking forward to it.

Paul Midgley, trainer of Tarboosh
We'd like a little more rain, but he's in good order and we're expecting a good run.

Brian Meehan, trainer of Amplify
He's in great order but he doesn't want it to rain too much. If it was soft or anything like that we wouldn't run him, but he's in great nick.
