Royal Ascot clues were to be found all over town on Saturday morning and Stoute had a turnout reminiscent of the late Sir Henry Cecil to watch his team on a rare foray over to the Cambridge Road Polytrack. The Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes winner has plenty of options at the Royal meeting, but the way he finished off his spin with Autocratic suggests the 1m4f Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes, a race his trainer has already won ten times, could be his bag.

The ante-post favourite for the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes was granted the luxury of heading the Clarehaven Ascot-bound team up the Al Bahathri Polytrack at second lot, where he finished to good effect under Robert Havlin. Given his style of racing the son of Frankel should be suited by the stiff uphill finish on Tuesday week, although no winner of the Listed Heron Stakes has followed up in the St James's Palace since Kris in 1979.

Sharja Bridge – Roger Varian

As there has been no rain in West Suffolk since the middle of May, the only alternative to the artificial surfaces is the watered gallop where Varian was out earlier than anyone else with some of his Royal Ascot candidates. The four-year-old was not stopping at the close of his mile exercise under Andrea Atzeni and, although he is in the betting for the Royal Hunt Cup, the son of Oasis Dream is more likely to head to the Wolferton Stakes on the final day of the meeting.

Curiosity – Hugo Palmer

Jack Mitchell was on duty at 5.45am on Friday morning despite only arriving back from riding a winner at Carlisle three hours earlier, and still managed to be seen to good effect on this son of High Chaparral. The three-year-old ran well on his reappearance in a handicap at Newmarket over Guineas weekend, form which received a boost when third-placed Sam Gold then bolted up at Doncaster.

Poetry in motion - Michael Bell's Kingman filly

Bell has recently rejoined forces with Lordship Stud owner Trevor Harris and this juvenile could yet give freshman sire Kingman a winner over the summer judging by the way she powered out of the Dip in her work on the watered gallop. The daughter of Group 3 winner Swiss Diva was originally set to be sold at the Tattersalls October Sales last year but was withdrawn with a superficial injury.
