Much has been written regarding the popularity of racing and the seemingly relentless desire to open it to the mass market.

Of all the recent contributions, Fran Rockingham (Letters, July 9) was closest to reality and it has prompted me to share my view as a 48-year-old who recently completed the full set of British courses and has attended 200-plus meetings over the last 27 years.

The figures for 2015 suggested more than six million people visited Britain’s courses that year, which is no small feat.
