Champions Day might seem a long way removed from the first afternoon of the British Flat turf season, very nearly seven months ago, but the two fixtures could end up with a strong thread tying them together.
Surely few people would have looked at the Doncaster card on March 23 with an eye to spotting a potential Group 1 winner at Ascot’s grand finale. Yet the betting suggests that not just one but two Doncaster runners have made it all the way here with big chances.
Both of them won Listed races that day. Charyn kicked off the card with an easy victory in the Doncaster Mile and Montassib flew home late to take the Cammidge Trophy by a neck.
