According to Simon Clare of Coral (July 4) “racing needs several million pounds for a mass-market campaign to sell the sport. That doesn’t mean event marketing but the marketing of the sport itself”.

He adds: “That’s costly and not easy to measure but it’s how you change people’s perceptions.”

Later we get: “The sport’s greatest two assets, in terms of marketing, are HM the Queen and Frankie Dettori” from someone at City Racing who wants to run races up the Champs Elysees.
