I cannot be the only one who was horrified by the tale of an 18-year-old Tony McCoy being told he was not "tough enough" to be a jump jockey by Jim Bolger for screaming after breaking his leg on the gallops.

The incident, which took place in 1993, was part of McCoy's refreshingly honest interview with Peter Thomas, in which the 20-time champion jockey outlines his journey from young rider to winning machine.

McCoy emphasises the positives he took from the incident, adding that he respected the trainer's honesty and was determined to prove him wrong. It shaped a mentality that took him to the top.
