There's a revolution taking place – and Ruby's reaction to Envoi Allen proves it

If Envoi Allen had been around in 1990 rather than 2020 his fan base would have resembled a book club rather than the Liverpool supporters' club. You didn't dare get carried away with novices in those days. The apprentice plumber fixed taps and made the tea; he was not installing underground heating systems in five-star hotels.

If Envoi Allen had won on his chase debut on October 30, 1990 – fending off four vastly inferior rivals at odds of 1-14 – we would have heard no more about it. There would have been no fuss made.

Had the six-year-old come on the scene 30 years ago, the analysis of his Down Royal win would have been a mere two words, 'job done'.
