Showcase for ex-racehorses brings Christmas cheer - but excellent Treo Eile needs to be part of a systematic approach
Racing officialdom should not be allowed to abdicate responsibility
A highlight of my year was a visit to the Royal Meath Agricultural Show at Trim in September to report on show classes for ex-racehorses.
I spoke to many of the riders involved and was struck by the sense of community that has grown up under the auspices of Treo Eile, a not-for-profit organisation doing sterling work in facilitating the retraining of racehorses.
I saw at close quarters how these horses – several well-known, others who had undistinguished careers – were thriving in a new environment, impeccably turned out, lovingly cared for by skilled and dedicated riders. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring day.
