Racing League could be a dodo but at least it's a new approach to an old problem
I can't say the prospect of more Racing League enthuses me greatly. Then again, I'm sure I was lukewarm about the starting stalls and the Shergar Cup as well, and they haven't turned out too bad. The thing is, like them or not, I don't remember ever railing against them, trying to have them banned or complaining that they'd ruin my life.
The problem with racing is that people are happy to moan and moan for years and years about the ills that plague the sport, but when presented with a faintly possible partial solution they just moan even more. You think poor prize money is a new problem? I've been writing pieces about it for 25 years now, and it was an old story when I started. And we're no closer to finding a solution. Likewise racing's dwindling esteem in the eyes of the wider world and the need to engage a new, younger audience to prevent racing dying on its backside when people of my age do the same.
Then somebody comes along with a scheme: they call it Racing League and it's different. It's a bit of a barmy one and maybe it will never really catch on, but the downside seems small so why not give it an extended airing, allow it to iron out a few glitches, and see where it leads.
