For a jockey, second can feel even more agonising than finishing last.
That was likely to have been the feeling after Saturday's Cesarewitch, with the fate of the winner Alphonse Le Grande hanging in the balance pending a meeting of the whip review committee on Tuesday.
Jockey Jamie Powell appeared to hit his mount ten times, which would result in disqualification, when snatching victory by a nose on the Cathy O'Leary-trained gelding and he is facing a hefty ban should the committee rule against him.
