Numbers crisis at Dundalk shows there is no substitute for coherent planning

A crisis of massive over-subscription for races at Dundalk underlines the need for a thorough review of race-planning and programming on Ireland's Flat scene.

Last Monday's fixture at Dundalk was the first of four extra meetings scheduled for the country's only all-weather venue and was a response to a demand made starkly evident in December when three fixtures attracted an aggregate 988 entries.

Under pressure from bodies representing owners and trainers, Horse Racing Ireland added two additional fixtures to the schedule for both January and February, meaning the County Louth venue will host a total of 12 meetings through the first two months of 2021.
