I've said 'wow' four times this Flat season - and I fully expect Economics to make that five at Leopardstown
It is the silver anniversary of Daylami delivering the defining display of his career. How fitting. Yes, 25 years have passed since the greatest grey of them all – well, on the Flat anyway – sneaked up the inside of Royal Anthem rounding the final bend of the Esat Digifone Irish Champion Stakes and Dettori proceeded to troll Gary Stevens for a few strides, so much so that RTE racing commentator Tony O'Hehir even referred to Frankie's "cheekiness" in his call.
Despite Dettori showboating for most of the final furlong, his right arm raised in the air for at least 100 yards, Daylami won by a whopping nine lengths and was given a sky-scraping Racing Post Rating of 138 afterwards.
The day Fantastic Light darkened Galileo in the same race two years later gets far more air time these days, that bruising battle between two heavyweights representing two superpowers, but Daylami was undoubtedly the most impressive Irish Champion Stakes winner in my lifetime. It was pure unadulterated awesomeness.
