'Is Colin Keane actually any good?' He certainly is – but it's taking Britain far too long to realise it
Colin Keane is on the cusp of becoming Ireland's champion jockey for a sixth time, which means he is about to overtake Johnny Murtagh. He already holds the record for most wins in a season – that was in 2021 when he got to 141 – and he is currently just three winners shy of reaching a century for the fifth time.
He has already won the Breeders' Cup Turf, the Irish Derby and Oaks, the Irish 2,000 Guineas and two Tattersalls Gold Cups. Oh, and by the way, it is probably worth pointing out that he only turned 30 last month.
It is quite the CV for someone still so young, and he has plenty of time to make those numbers astronomical, but it struck me last Saturday that he still has to prove himself outside Ireland. He hasn't quite cracked Britain yet. He is more The Undertones than U2.
