'I couldn't give a toss about who will win the Gold Cup' - it's time we took a leaf out of Ted Walsh's book and lived in the moment

Never mind the relentless Cheltenham focus, racing would benefit if we focused more on the here and now

When did racing fans become so obsessed with the future? Perhaps the way the Cheltenham Festival dominates the jumps season is the root cause but either way, being incapable of living in the moment is doing the sport no favours.

It doesn't matter if it's a Grade 1 at Sandown, a big handicap at Newbury or an intriguing novice hurdle at a so-called smaller track, the focus all too often is what will be next rather than reflecting on what we have just seen.

I'm certainly guilty of asking the obligatory, 'Which race at Cheltenham might you look at?' question when speaking to winning connections at the races, but imagine hearing it being asked after almost every half-decent race on television. I get it, there is only so much time on air and certain questions do need to be asked, but it should not be at the expense of showcasing what we've just seen.
