It was not by chance Aidan O'Brien won his eighth St Leger; he is a master trainer and Coolmore breed better middle-distance staying horses than anyone else.
It was no fluke Jim Goldie took the Mallard and Portland with last-gasp winners; he is as adept in coaxing improvement from horses as he is in placing them and employs fine tacticians in Paul Mulrennan and Amie Waugh. And it was not just good fortune that Doncaster should welcome the prime minister and his wife to its biggest day, a year after the king and queen were present.
