One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
Trainer
William Haggas has been quiet recently when compared to the amount of winners he was knocking in during the summer, but he has some leading chances who could turn his form around.
Haggas – who has declared 17 runners for Saturday – has been operating at a nine per cent strike-rate in the last two weeks, but saddles some of his stars in Britain and France and looks to have a strong chance in the Prix Dollar (4.00) at Longchamp with popular stalwart Addeybb and the consistent Grocer Jack.
The Newmarket trainer could land a Group 1 in the Prix de Royallieu (1.33) with dual Group 2 winner Sea La Rosa. Verry Elleegant will be in opposition.
In Britain his best hope looks to be with Irish St Leger second Hamish in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot (2.25).
Jockey
Star Australian jockey Mark Zahra flies over for one special ride as he reunites with Verry Elleegant in the Prix de Royallieu (1.33) at Longchamp.
Zahra, who partnered the brilliant mare to success in the 2020 Caulfield Cup, has not ridden Verry Elleegant since they finished seventh in the Melbourne Cup that year, a race she won 12 months later under James McDonald.
Zahra was expected to partner Verry Elleegant in the Arc before the seven-year-old was controversially denied a place in the race earlier in the week, but a win in the 1m6f contest would be good compensation.
Horse
Leading stayer Kyprios bids to cap a stunning season with Group 1 glory in the Prix du Cadran (3.25) at Longchamp.
Unbeaten in five starts this year, including thrilling wins in the Ascot Gold Cup and a vintage running of the Goodwood Cup, the Aidan O'Brien-trained four-year-old was victorious on his last start in the Irish St Leger in September.
He faces 11 rivals and the biggest threat to his bid for a six-timer could be runaway Lonsdale Cup winner Quickthorn.
Race
The Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (2.42) features a fascinating clash between the best fillies and mares in Britain, and Saffron Beach bids to become just the second horse to win multiple runnings of the Group 1.
A dominant winner in the race last year, Saffron Beach has been in fine form this season, winning the Prix Rothschild before finishing runner-up in the Matron Stakes.
Her rivals at Newmarket will be tough to beat, with stunning Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Homeless Songs, Falmouth Stakes winner Prosperous Voyage and exciting filly Laurel, who was supplemented earlier in the week, in the line-up.
