One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch at York this week
Trainer
Aidan O’Brien was dealt a blow when star three-year-old St Mark’s Basilica was ruled out of the Juddmonte International (3.35) but such is the strength and depth of the Ballydoyle operation, he runs a readymade replacement in last year’s Yorkshire Oaks winner Love.
Love is one of several notable chances for O’Brien this week with one-time Derby favourite High Definition returning to York for the first time since being beaten by Hurricane Lane in the Dante. The three-year-old is strongly fancied for the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes (3.00) with Gordon Stakes runner-up Sir Lucan also in the mix.
Snowfall attempts to complete the Epsom Oaks-Irish Oaks-Yorkshire Oaks treble (3.35) on Thursday with stablemates Divinely and La Joconde in the race.
In the Sky Bet Ebor (3.35) on Saturday, O’Brien relies on Passion who brings class form to the lucrative handicap, having been third to Wonderful Tonight in a Group 1 just two starts ago.
Jockey
Although many will be envious of Ryan Moore partnering O’Brien’s fancies, William Buick has an equally strong book of rides across the four days.
Queen’s Vase winner Kemari and the exciting Noble Truth could get Buick and Godolphin off to the perfect start in the Great Voltigeur (3.00) and the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (2.25).
Buick will also be hoping to foil Snowfall’s hat-trick bid aboard David Menuisier’s stable star Wonderful Tonight in the Yorkshire Oaks, while Spanish Mission is high on the list to overturn Stradivarius in the Lonsdale Cup (2.25) after finishing third to Subjectivist in the Gold Cup.
Buick delivered Suesa perfectly at Glorious Goodwood to land the King George Stakes and will be hoping to repeat the feat in Friday’s Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes (3.35)
Horse
One horse who could pose a big threat to Buick and Suesa’s chances is Golden Pal, whose trainer Wesley Ward proclaimed could be "the best horse I've ever had".
Although the three-year-old sprinter is yet to win outside of the US, it will be fascinating to see if he can go one better than last year’s agonising Royal Ascot neck defeat to The Lir Jet in the Norfolk Stakes.
Race
With 58 possibles still remaining for the £500,000 showpiece event of the week, Saturday's Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, some connections will have a nervous wait to see if they will be able to take a shot at Europe's richest flat handicap.
The talented Euchen Glen and last year's winner Fujaira Prince are at the top of the weights for the prestigious 1m6f handicap.
