One jockey, one trainer, one horse and one race to watch at Epsom on Saturday

One jockey

You have to go back to 2013 for the last time Ryan Moore won the Derby (4.30), in spite of his boss Aidan O'Brien having won four of the ensuing seven runnings.

Moore has found himself on the wrong Ballydoyle horse on those occasions, but with favourite Bolshoi Ballet being O'Brien's only runner this year there is no chance of being upstaged by a stablemate.

Moore has been in superb form already this season, riding winners in Britain at a 26 per cent strike-rate, and looks in prime position to gain a third Derby success.

He has one other ride on the card – Maximal in the Diomed Stakes (3.10) – who takes a step up in class after finishing second in last month's Dee Stakes at Chester.

One trainer

Ed Dunlop knows what it takes to train an Epsom Classic winner having twice won the Oaks, but the Derby has eluded him.

This year he will have high hopes of changing that with John Leeper – named in honour of his father John Dunlop – who is the best priced of the British challengers.

Dunlop trained John Leeper's dam, Snow Fairy, to win the Oaks in the same Anamoine silks in 2010, meaning a success would be a poignant one all round for connections.

One horse

While Bolshoi Ballet sits as clear Derby favourite it would be unwise to underestimate Jim Bolger's Mac Swiney, who arrives at Epsom as one of only two horses in the field to have won a Group 1.

Successful in last season's Vertem Futurity at Doncaster, Mac Swiney put a disappointing run in the Derrinstown Derby Trial behind him with a tough success in the Irish 1,000 Guineas last time.

Bolger won his sole Derby in 2008 with Mac Swiney's sire New Approach and this year has a contender who still looks unexposed at trips beyond a mile.

One race

The Cazoo Derby is the biggest race of the Flat season in Britain and this running has the makings of being one of the most hotly contested of recent years.

There are questions to be answered everywhere you look. How good is Bolshoi Ballet? Will the late jockey change on John Leeper pay off? Which trial form will prove the strongest?

Whether having a punt or not, sit back and enjoy one of British racing's greatest spectacles. Let us the hope we will have winner to befit what is always a superb occasion.
