No broken bones as Oliver Stammers recovers from scary incident at Chester
Jockey Oliver Stammers could be back racing in two weeks' time after avoiding serious injury after he was airlifted to hospital following a nasty unseating at Chester on Friday night.
Stammers came down in the early stages of the 7f nursery aboard the Ian Williams-trained Sir Min and was treated on the track before requiring an air ambulance, which led to a 45-minute delay to racing.
The apprentice jockey was taken to nearby Aintree Hospital where he remains under observation. He will miss at least the next fortnight of racing after suffering a concussion.
Stammers' agent Simon Dodds said: "I've spoken to Oliver in hospital. He has a concussion and a small leg injury form where the horse trod on him, but there are no broken bones. He was more frustrated about missing his three rides at Chester today!
"It's bad luck because he's been on a really good run, but he'll be out now for at least two weeks because of the concussion. He'll return as soon as he can and he thanks everyone for their many well-wishes."
Fellow jockey Andrew Mullen provided a similarly upbeat message in the very early hours of Saturday morning when he tweeted: "Just off the phone to Oli Stammers. He is a bit sore and feeling sick from the morphine, but nothing serious at the minute. He’s told me to tell everyone he’s ok."
Stammers, who is based with Mark Johnston, is in his fourth season and is enjoying his best year yet with a tally of 19 winners from 150 rides.
Ian Williams later confirmed Sir Min was okay after the incident.
