The final race at Fairyhouse on Friday night will long be remembered by the O'Dwyer family after 16-year-old Charlie rode the first winner of his career on Roses Queen, a filly owned by his mother Audrey and trained by his father Conor.

The teenager is nearing the completion of his Junior Cert examinations at Newbridge College and is an apprentice jockey to his father, who enjoyed Cheltenham Gold Cup successes on Imperial Call and War Of Attrition during his career in the saddle.

Speaking on Saturday, Conor O'Dwyer said: "It was fantastic for Charlie. We were looking forward to the day he would ride his first winner, but for him to do it on a horse we own and train is unbelievable."

Roses Queen, a 12-1 shot, made virtually all in the 1m4f handicap and held on to win by a short head.

The winning jockey said: "It's great to ride my first winner, and it's really nice that it was for mum and dad. That makes it very special.

"If you hit Roses Queen behind the saddle she can come back to you. I just gave her one light smack coming into the final furlong and it was enough to keep her head in front."
