No happy return: Trevor Whelan fractures ankle back at scene of biggest Flat win
What a difference a fortnight makes. Just 14 days after riding the biggest winner of his new career as a Flat jockey at Chester, Trevor Whelan limped away from the same track with a fractured left ankle.
The rider, who suffered the injury when unseated after the line from Rockesbury following a narrow victory in the 7½f novice race on Saturday, could be out of action for two months.

"I didn't think I had broken it yesterday and I walked back to the weighing room, but when I took my boot off it swelled up and was pretty sore," said Whelan on Sunday.
"I think it's just a routine break but I haven't seen my own doctor and I don't know how long I'll be out for. I'd say it could be two months but it depends how it heals."
Former jump jockey Whelan, 29, has switched solely to the Flat, having spent time mixing riding under both codes.
Rockesbury was a 13th winner of 2018 for Whelan, who had won the Listed Stand Cup at Chester on Blakeney Point for Roger Charlton a fortnight earlier.
"I was just starting to get going," said Whelan. "I rode a Listed winner at Chester and I'd ridden another winner there on the Friday. I was quite busy all this week riding – it's just come at the wrong time. But it can always be worse, it's only an ankle.

"I plan to ride on the all-weather in the winter and as soon as I'm back I'll be ready to go again and kick on."
