Newmarket's newest trainer hoping to get off to a flyer on Saturday
Former Qatar-based handler Hilal Kobeissi saddles his first runner in Britain when Althumama Line goes for the 5f novice Stakes at Wolverhampton (6.30) on Saturday.
The 30-year-old's father Mohammed Kobeissi was understudy to trainer Mohamed Moubarak. Kobeissi jnr, who was born in Newmarket, trained a host of winners during his seven years in Qatar, many in combination with his father, but is ready for a new challenge and has brought many of his owners with him.
Kobeissi said: "It's always been my ambition to train in Newmarket but I first had to go to Qatar to get me going and also to build up a client base.
"Those owners are fully behind my decision to train in Britain and have supported me, although I would like to stress that I don't just want to train for Qataris, hopefully I can get others on board."
Kobeissi is starting out with eight horses at the White Yard at Wroughton House Stables, which he rents from Simon Pearce. Most of them are two-year-olds who were bought at the recent breeze-up sales in the town.
He added: "Before I starting training I had work experience at Ballydoyle, which was amazing and taught me a lot. We've some nice horses to run and Althumama Line has been going nicely. The race may be a bit hot but we have to start somewhere.
"Next week we have the three-year-old Happy Bear, who we bought from France, to run at the St Leger meeting at Doncaster."
