Naval Crown leaves pursuers in his wake to top Ten To Follow leaderboard
An exhilarating Royal Ascot dramatically reshaped the Tote Ten to Follow leaderboard, with new table-topper DB17 managing to include four of the week’s bonus race winners in their stable. Most significantly, it included Saturday’s Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner Naval Crown.
The Godolphin second-string – according to jockey choice and cap colour – started at 33-1 with the bookmakers but the Tote paid a win dividend of £56.55 and £9.85 for a place so Naval Crown contributed 116.40 points to teams who had selected him. That, however, was not many, only 0.6 per cent of stables, including all the leaders.
Naval Crown achieved by far the biggest points haul of the week, with State Of Rest the next best with 61.65 for 4.5 per cent of stables thanks to a gutsy win in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
Perfect Power made it a memorable week for Richard Fahey. A popular Ten To Follow pick, selected by 21.9 per cent of stables, the three-year-old produced a fine run under Christophe Soumillon to land the Commonwealth Cup and 56.15 points.
The breathtaking success of Inspiral in the Coronation Stakes promised plenty more to come and, despite having had to miss the 1,000 Guineas, she was a popular selection, having been picked by 17.2 per cent of stables. She made a downpayment of 56.15 points at Ascot and gave Frankie Dettori his sole success of the meeting.
Many punters were hoping that Dettori would land the Gold Cup with Stradivarius, but the eight-year-old three-time winner of the race was not so popular with Ten to Follow players, having been selected by only 7.7 per cent of teams, compared to the 29.7 per cent who went for the Gold Cup winner Kyprios who therefore benefited by 53.78 points.
Unsurprisingly, the mighty milers Coroebus and Baaeed were massively popular winners for Ten to Follow enthusiasts. The 2,000 Guineas winner collected 53.11 points for 69.4 per cent of stables in the St James’s Palace Stakes, while the unbeaten Baaeed, the most selected horse in the Ten to Follow, figuring in 85.3 per cent of stables, was an easy winner of the Queen Anne Stakes for 52.18 points.
