Moore aims to be in the driving seat again in novelty event

Jamie Moore, who has won this popular annual novelty event over the Derby course twice in recent years via Alberta (2016) and Rossetti (2013), will have the use of an £80,000 luxury Lexus for the weekend if he manages to get his mount Altaayil home in front of eight rivals.

Race sponsor Lexus is offering the additional prize to the winning rider in recognition of the fact that jump jockeys can clock up 70,000 miles a year.

“It’s good of the sponsors to offer that prize,” Moore said. “All the boys look forward to riding in the race each year.

“It’s something different at a world-famous track and it’s nice for us all to have a go round there. It’s a lot of fun but we all want to win.”

Altaayil has proved disappointing over hurdles since joining Moore’s father Gary and the family are hoping that the return to the Flat – he landed a Wolverhampton maiden for Sir Michael Stoute over two years ago – can seen him bounce back to winning ways.

“I’d like to think he has a chance,” Moore said. “He’s fit and well. Maybe he’s not a hurdler.”

Gold Cup-winning rider Nico de Boinville and Leighton Aspell, who has won two Grand Nationals, are among the other jump jockeys taking part.

Aspell appears to have a particularly good chance aboard likely favourite C’est No Mour, who he partners for his friend Peter Hedger.

C’est No Mour has won three of his last four starts, including the Amateurs' Derby over the course and distance, and Hedger said: "As long as the ground doesn’t get too soft I’d say he goes there with every chance.

“He’s a nice horse, and is still going the right way. Leighton can certainly win Grand Nationals, but he keeps falling off the ones I give him to ride over jumps! He owes me one.”

Group 1-winning rider Dougie Costello mainly plies his trade on the Flat nowadays, but is eligible to partner Cordite for local trainer Jim Boyle.

Cordite also won over course and distance last month and Costello is looking forward to both the ride and seeing many of his old mates once again.

“The race is always good fun,” he said. “It will be nice to see all the lads again. These races are very popular among the jockeys and Epsom always looks after us very well.”
