Monster Placepot with £21,288 dividend at Worcester and just 2.15 winning units
There were 62,699.50 units in the Worcester Placepot as the tape went up for the opening 2m½f handicap chase, but just 2.15 winning units by the end of race six, with a massive winning dividend of £21,288.60.
For Placepot punters who bet through the Tote website, the Tote+ ten per cent boost ensured a £1 level stake payout of £23,417.46 from a pool size of £45,770.64.
Despite Shareef Star justifying favouritism in the first race, almost 55 per cent of punters were knocked out of the Placepot – and the results only got worse for the majority of those with an interest.
Shareef Star was the only favourite to be placed in the six Placepot races on the card and Haul Away led home a 12-1, 10-1, 8-1 first three home in race two.
There were only 6,112.95 units left going into leg three, in which 20-1 shot Jemima P landed the 2m4f handicap chase with 22-1 and 11-2 shots filling the places.
Dancingwith Storms and Glance From Clover accounted for just over half of the remaining units in leg four but finished fourth and fifth, with 11-2 chance High Change scoring in the 2m4f handicap hurdle, which was televised on ITV4.
The results
Leg 1 1 Shareef Star 100-30f, 2 Royal Plaza 10-1, 3 Knight Destoyer 5-1
Leg 2 1 Haul Away 12-1, 2 Storm Home 10-1, 3 Frisco Bay 8-1
Leg 3 1 Jemima P 20-1, 2 Imperial Acolyte 22-1, 3 Theatre Mix 11-2
Leg 4 1 High Change 11-2, 2 Tashunka 17-2, 3 Holly James 11-2
Leg 5 1 Royal Practitioner 50-1, 2 Forthegreatergood 14-1, 3 Maroochi 22-1
Leg 6 1 Jac Brown 17-2, 2 Samtara 10-1, 3 The Macon Lugnatic 11-2
The 350.55 units going into race five were whittled down to just 36.08 after 50-1 shot Royal Practitioner scored on her debut in the 2m4f mares' maiden hurdle for Fergal O'Brien, with stablemate and 14-1 chance Forthegreatergood finishing second and 22-1 shot Maroochi in third.
17-2 winner Jac Brown, 10-1 second Samtara and 11-2 third The Macon Lugnatic were the horses to side with in leg six, accounting for 5.95 per cent of the small sample of remaining units and sealing a sizeable payout for the lucky winning punters.
How the Tote Placepot works and a guide to betting on it
Race-by-race reaction
James Bowen, jockey of Shareef Star
He's always wanted a fence. We felt going into a handicap would suit him better than going a novice and it's worked out well.
James Bowen, jockey of Haul Away
He's gone well through the race, I was delighted with him. He was fresh and well coming into today and tried hard there.
Emma Lavelle, trainer of Jemima P
She was really able to get into a nice rhythm with her galloping and jumping. She likes nice ground and chasing is what she's made for.
Sam Twiston-Davies, jockey of High Change
He jumped well, relaxed nicely and travelled throughout the race. Richard [Newland] has not had him long but he seems to have settled into the routine well and we know how good he is with these types of horses.
William Kennedy, jockey of Royal Practitioner
She's an eight-year-old mare who'd never been on the racetrack but that was a very good performance. She travelled really well, jumped well the whole way and did it nicely – hopefully there'll be more to come.
Ben Jones, jockey of Jac Brown
I've only ridden him a handful of times but I've finished second and first on him so he's been a proper good horse to me. Hopefully there's bigger things in the future for him.
