Pure poetry as Lord Yeats keeps O'Keeffe on winning beat

Jedd O'Keeffe said he felt like he was dreaming on Saturday as he followed up a career landmark 8,881-1 four-timer on Friday with a Listed victory at Newmarket with the progressive Lord Yeats.

The Middleham trainer had experienced none of those highs previously but in a whirlwind 24 hours he secured five wins, including his first two successes at Listed level and a maiden win at Newmarket.

More Mischief had delivered the Listed breakthrough when claiming the Hoppings Stakes at Newcastle but Lord Yeats kept the narrative going when making most of the running to clinch the Betway Fred Archer Stakes.

"It feels like we're dreaming," said O'Keeffe. "We'd never had a treble let alone a four-timer before yesterday and we'd never won a Listed race and now we've won two in the space of hours.

"Lord Yeats was very game out there and this is our first winner at Newmarket. We may have a look at the July meeting here but he is also entered in the American and Irish St Legers which could be more realistic later on. It's important to get black type for these horses for owner-breeders Geoff and Sandra Turnbull."

More Mischief (10-1) was the last of O'Keeffe's four Friday winners. Half an hour earlier stablemate Montanna (16-1) had landed a classified stakes on the same card, while Injam (4-1) and Metisian (17-2) had scored for the yard at Doncaster in the afternoon.

The accumulator paid 8,881-1 and O'Keeffe said: "I don't bet but I've just had a text from a friend who had £7 on and has won £6,000."

More Mischief, second in the same race last year, was having her first run of the season but the North Yorkshire trainer said: "She has been ready to run since April but we have been waiting for the ground, she needs give. She has been working really well at home.

"Montanna is still learning and he's getting better all the time. Metisian is another learning the game while the long-term plan for Injam could be the Cesarewitch if he goes up enough in the handicap."

Jockey Graham Lee , who rode More Mischief, paid tribute to O'Keeffe's achievement and said: "He's a very good trainer, he buys a lovely stamp of a horse. He deserves this, days like these make up for the tough days.

"But I felt the pressure. He'd had three winners and I didn't want to be the one who got beaten!"
