Milestone victory: John Gosden trains his 3,000th winner on the Flat in Britain
John Gosden reached the noteworthy milestone of 3,000 winners on the Flat in Britain when El Misk struck in the 1m4f handicap at Kempton on Wednesday.
The Newmarket trainer, who started the day on 2,999 Flat victories, had four horses running across Britain in his bid to pass the landmark, and he completed it on the third go.
Now he could overhaul his best tally for winners in a calendar year in Britain before the year is out, with his 2018 haul of 178 winners rating the target to beat. He is on 169 winners with his runners in Britain in 2019.
He leads the race to be crowned champion trainer, a title he has claimed three times before in 2012, 2015 and 2018, although Aidan O'Brien poses a serious threat to his championship defence, and the master of Ballydoyle has five of the 12 runners declared in Friday's Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at Newcastle.
There have been nine domestic Group 1 wins this year from Gosden's string based at Clarehaven Stables, including Classic success with Anapurna (Oaks) and Logician (St Leger), while the top-level triumphs of Enable (Coral-Eclipse, King George and Yorkshire Oaks) and Stradivarius (Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup) have ensured the trainer has dominated the column inches throughout the summer.
He has trained at least 100 winners on the Flat in Britain on 11 occasions since his first domestic winner in 1989, with the century reached in each of the last eight years.
