A first winner as a trainer is always a special moment, but Jake Coulson should have no problems remembering his maiden success as Quivvy Lough obliged at 100-1 at Uttoxeter on Wednesday.

Coulson, who is based locally in Heaton, had two runners in the 2m7½f conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle, and it was Quivvy Lough, ridden by Cillin Leonard, who sprang a surprise.

It was the six-year-old mare's first start for the yard and a first winner for owner Kevin Dove.

Leonard, who got up late for a half-length victory, told Sky Sports Racing: "I rode her when she was with Olly Murphy and she gave me a fantastic spin that day here, and today was exactly the same, she winged the last.

"She'll gallop all day for you and leads Jake's string at home. She's a fantastic horse to have."

Coulson, 26, had a handful of rides under rules as an amateur before starting out as a trainer, and was delighted to send out his first winner.

He said: "It was much needed. I don't think she should have been 100-1, she'd run well here before for Olly over course and distance. He put her up for sale and I was hoping just a quick change of scenery and getting her out quick might be the key. Obviously it's paid off."
