Lizzie Kelly took racing to a new audience and it would be good to see her again
Lizzie Kelly has done a huge amount for racing over the past half a dozen years. She pushed back the barriers to participation, and success, at the highest level over jumps. More importantly, she has been a willing communicator for the sport in a variety of media that would not usually bother to glance our way.
Crucially, too, she has done so with a welcoming smile on her face and has made the sport look as though it might be quite good fun. And when the smile has been turned to a grimace by injury she has borne the pain stoically.
When future generations watch reruns of Kelly riding at her best – think Agrapart's head defeat of L'Ami Serge in the 2017 Relkeel Hurdle – or footage of Rachael Blackmore, Hayley Turner, Josephine Gordon or Hollie Doyle, they might be baffled why in 2020 women still represented such a small fraction of the riding elite. There were only eight women in the top 100 jockeys over jumps last season when only one of Kelly's rides came from a stable outside those of her family.
