These are the top eight Derby contenders after Friday's market upheaval
Ante-post favourite Luxembourg's grip on the Cazoo Derby market loosened on Friday when trainer Aidan O'Brien revealed the star colt had suffered a setback, putting his Epsom participation in some doubt. With the race now thrown wide open, Richard Birch gives a horse-by-horse guide to the current top eight in the betting for the Classic on June 4
Cazoo Derby racecard and betting
Luxembourg
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Best Derby price: 6-1
There is an old saying in racing that the 2,000 Guineas usually offers the best guide to the Derby and it looked to have been a key piece of form this year.
Luxembourg, who finished a staying-on third behind Coroebus and Native Trail at Newmarket, appeared to have outstanding credentials for Epsom until his trainer Aidan O'Brien revealed he now faces a race to be fit for the Derby.
Changingoftheguard
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Best Derby price: 8-1
Burst into the premier Classic picture on Wednesday with a six-and-a-half-length success over 4-11 favourite New London in the Group 3 Chester Vase.
He looks a strong galloper with stacks of class and will be hard to keep out of the first three at Epsom given normal progress.
Piz Badile
Trainer: Donnacha O'Brien
Best Derby price: 8-1
Showed good battling qualities to turn what had looked certain defeat into Group 3 Ballysax Stakes victory at Leopardstown last month.
His trainer told the Racing Post on Tuesday the Ulysses colt would go straight to Epsom and skip Sunday's Derby Trial at Leopardstown.
Walk Of Stars
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Best Derby price: 8-1
Winner of two of his three starts, including on reappearance at Newbury last month when beating the expensive Hafit by a neck.
Reported to have improved considerably for that run and likely to be sent off a red-hot favourite for Saturday's Lingfield Derby Trial.
Desert Crown
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
Best Derby price: 10-1
Relatively unfancied in market, but made impressive winning debut on soft ground at Nottingham last November on his sole start to date.
Holds an entry in Thursday's Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes at York and the fact this Nathaniel colt is as short as he is in the market suggests he has done well during the spring.
Eydon
Trainer: Roger Varian
Best Derby price: 16-1
Belied odds of 33-1 when finishing a close fourth to Coroebus in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last Saturday over a mile.
He will have to prove his stamina at 1m4f if connections give him the green light for Epsom and there's a chance this colt will be most effective at 1m2f.
New London
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Best Derby price: 16-1
Brought an unbeaten record and a tall reputation into Wednesday's Chester Vase, but was firmly put in his place by Changingoftheguard with seemingly no excuses.
A more galloping track may see New London to better effect and perhaps he's more of a St Leger type rather than a Derby colt.
Star Of India
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Best Derby price: 16-1
Galileo colt who took his form to another level when landing the Listed Dee Stakes at Chester on Thursday by two and a quarter lengths from Cresta.
He looks a really likeable, relaxed, well-balanced type, who should handle Epsom and is sure to improve for the step up to 1m4f.
Cazoo Derby (4.30 Epsom, June 4)
Paddy Power: 6 Luxembourg, 7 Changingoftheguard, Walk Of Stars, Piz Badile, 8 Desert Crown, 10 Star Of India, 12 Stone Age, 14 Eydon, New London, Cash, 16 Point Lonsdale, Westover, 25 bar
