Who are bookmakers fearing ahead of Glorious Goodwood and Galway festival?

Bookmakers in Britain and Ireland are gearing up for one of the biggest weeks of the Flat season as Glorious Goodwood and the Galway festival take centre stage.

The action begins on Monday at Galway as seven days of racing presents plenty of opportunities for punters, while Goodwood’s five-day festival starts on Tuesday.

Bookmakers have been having their say on where some of the early money has been going.

At Goodwood, Paddy Power have seen plenty of support for Platinum Jubilee fifth Sacred, who has been backed into around 2-1 for the Lennox Stakes, while Prix de Diane scorer Nashwa is now odds-on to land the Nassau Stakes.

One of the biggest moves of the week is for the Roger Teal-trained Whenthedealisdone, who has been backed into 10-1 (from 25) to triumph in the Stewards' Cup.

"They have all been well backed and on the Friday before Goodwood and Galway things always start to ignite," said Paddy Power's Paul Binfield.

"It's quite a significant week for the industry, but a single result of one of those horses wouldn’t really affect us, it’s only if people have them in multiples and then we’d probably experience a bit of mayhem."

Nicola McGeady from Ladbrokes feels Tuesday’s opening day of Goodwood may set the tone for the week.

"Stradivarius will be the public horse on day one of Goodwood, although it’ll be interesting to see just how popular he is without his usual wingman Frankie Dettori," she said.

"What is most worrisome on the opening day though is the jockey multiples, with Ryan Moore having seven including Just Fine and Kyprios. We'll be keeping a close eye on that.

"Later in the week the Stewards’ Cup has been very lively in recent days, with liabilities racking up for Whenthedealinsdone who is 10-1 (from 25), while Inver Park is now 8-1 (from 16)," she added.

At Galway, McGeady believes Willie Mullins is the man to fear during the festival.

"Galway is always tricky and a playground for each-way punters with such competitive big fields," she added. "Rather than picking out horses at this point, the man that will be worrying us instead is Willie Mullins who will no doubt be mob-handed in all the big races."

Coral’s Simon Clare added: "It's a really strong week of racing and we have stars at Goodwood on day one such as Stradivarius and Kyprios and that should be a fine battle.

"We’d be hoping for a bumper week of betting at Goodwood and then over in Galway as that’s a big deal too — it’s a massive double-header.

"We haven’t seen any significant gambles just yet. It’s all about how the favourites perform at the minute because if you have a day where they all win then it will be a bad day. If a few of them get beat then we should do well."
