Torquator Tasso emerges as Cartier Horse of the Year contender after Arc win
Torquator Tasso entered the Cartier Horse of the Year reckoning after his surprise success in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday.
The Marcel Weiss-trained colt raised his points tally to 96 with the victory and is joint-ninth with Alcohol Free with the now-retired St Mark's Basilica leading the overall standings with a score of 160 points.
However, the points only count to 30 per cent of how the winners of the Cartier Racing Awards are named with a panel of journalists and handicappers and votes from Racing Post and Daily Telegraph readers making up the rest.
Hurricane Lane moved up to third in the standings with his placed effort in the Arc and is on 152 points following a fine season which includes success in the Dante, Irish Derby, Grand Prix de Paris and St Leger. Tarnawa is on 56 points while fourth-placed Adayar is on 100.
In the other categories, Trueshan overtook Stradivarius at the head of the Stayers division when defeating that rival in the Prix du Cadran. He leads by eight points, on 68.
Victory in the Prix de l'Abbaye moved A Case Of You into contention for the Sprinters division. His short-head defeat of Air De Valse raises his tally to 58, just six behind July Cup hero Starman.
The weekend's action at Newmarket is likely to shake up the two-year-old divisions, but Angel Bleu enhanced his claims of being named leading colt with his Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere success putting him on 48 points. He and Native Trail are joint-second behind Perfect Power (80) but could feature in Saturday's Dewhurst Stakes.
In the fillies' division, Zellie joined Agartha and Sandrine at the head of affairs on 40 points, but with the Fillies' Mile to come on Friday.
