One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
One trainer
Roger Varian has been operating at a typically impressive 19 per cent strike-rate this season and has ten chances on Saturday to improve that statistic.
The Newmarket trainer has his team spread across the cards at Ascot, Haydock and Newmarket, with high-class filly juvenile Setarhe a major contender for the Group 3 Betway Sweet Solera Stakes (3.20) at the last-named track.
The booking of Frankie Dettori on Farzeen in the Listed BetVictor British EBF Dick Hern Stakes (2.05) at Haydock catches the eye, and ultra-consistent stayer Australis has rock-solid claims in the Class 2 2m handicap at Ascot (3.00).
Last seen finishing a fine second in the Northumberland Plate, the four-year-old son of Australia is well-fancied to continue his progression.
Game Player (2.25) and Look Closely (3.35) are other Varian-trained runners worthy of consideration in front of the ITV4 cameras.
One jockey
Hot on the heels of Oisin Murphy in the champion jockey's market, William Buick has an excellent opportunity to further enhance his title claims with seven rides at Newmarket.
Impressive novice winner Danilova is well worth her position in the Sweet Solera field (3.20) for Buick and trainer Charlie Appleby, and the pair also combine with well-bred Dubawi debutante Looktotherainbow in the 7f fillies' maiden (1.40).
Mark Johnston, Roger Teal, Roger Charlton and Andrew Balding are the other trainers to supply ammunition to Buick on a busy day for the top jockey.
One horse
A serious touch of class is brought to the day's proceedings by the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Veracious, who makes her hotly anticipated seasonal return in the Listed Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock (2.05).
The crack miler captured the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last year before going down narrowly in the Sun Chariot Stakes.
Fourth in the QEII behind King Of Change when last seen, Veracious will surely be tough to beat against inferior opponents with her sights lowered.
However, she was a beaten short-priced favourite on her comeback last campaign so exercising caution may be prudent.
One race
Top trainers Richard Hannon and Mark Johnston are two apiece in the Sweet Solera at Newmarket (3.20) over the past four years, and are responsible for the two ante-post market leaders on Saturday.
This juvenile contest is likely to throw up a 1,000 Guineas clue or two and Fly Miss Helen made a strong impression on her debut for Hannon at Newbury.
Johnston is reliant on Dubai Fountain, with the daughter of Teofilo's length-second in the Star Stakes at Sandown to Fev Rover setting the standard.
Aforementioned pair Setarhe and Danilova, along with the unbeaten William Haggas-trained Spirit Of Bermuda are also major contenders in what promises to be an informative event.
