Fellowes looks to Carnwennan to continue red-hot run in Northumberland Plate
Charlie Fellowes and his team have been enjoying their post-Royal Ascot celebrations and are hoping for more when Newcastle specialist Carnwennan goes for Saturday's Betfair Northumberland Plate.
The five-year-old stormed clear to land the consolation prize, the Northumberland Vase, by three and a half lengths last season and is looking to repeat that effort in the big race for his in-form stable.
He features among 46 entries for the two-mile handicap with the weights topped by Ed Dunlop's Red Verdon.
Fellowes arranged a socially distanced barbecue with his staff to celebrate his 713-1 Royal Ascot double, courtesy of Onassis and Chiefofchiefs, and success in Saturday's £40,000 handicap would keep the party going.
"The plan is to run Carnwennan," the trainer said about his general 10-1 shot. "He was entered at Ascot but we decided to wait and give him another week and go to Newcastle instead. He loves the course, the big field suits him, so it was the obvious place to go. We've kept him fresh and this has been his target for a long time.
"They always say when your horses are right that's the time to run them. We had a few drinks to celebrate the wins and we've got a socially distanced barbecue for tonight [Monday] for all the lads.
"Wins are few and far between, even for the top trainers, and you soon learn in this game to enjoy the good times. We'll make the most of it out in the garden tonight and it's what everyone deserves."
Other noteworthy runners in the Northumberland Plate include Ascot Stakes third Summer Moon, the 7-1 favourite, Magic Circle and Dubawi Fifty. Fellowes could also run recent Yarmouth winner Dubious Affair.
Fellowes could also be represented by Ascot winner Chiefofchiefs in the Betfair-sponsored Chipchase Stakes. Sir Michael Stoute's recent course-and-distance winner Mubakker tops the betting with the field including Brando, Judicial and Tabdeed.
Fellowes said of his potential runner: "We haven't got a huge number of options for him. The track is very important for this horse and Newcastle would suit him. This is an obvious place to go as long as he's okay.
"These look like the right races for both of them, so we'll look forward to the weekend."
