Why Alice Haynes had a 'bit of a moment' when hitting £20,000 button for York

Alice Haynes admitted to having a "bit of a moment" when she pressed the button to pay the £20,000 fee to add her star juvenile Lady Hollywood to the field for the Group 2 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (1.50) at York on Thursday.

The Newmarket trainer is stepping up to Group level with the daughter of Havana Grey, who gave her a win with her first runner in Ireland in a Listed race at Naas last month.

That victory over Mauiewowie and Treasure Trove received a timely boost when the second and third filled the first two placings in a Listed contest at the Curragh on Saturday.

Jointly owned by Amo Racing and Omnihorse Racing, Lady Hollywood is a 6-1 chance with Paddy Power for the Knavesmire contest behind the penalised pair Dramatised and Mawj.

Haynes said: "When it came down to the crunch of pressing a button that is going to cost £20,000, it's something that I haven't experienced before and I had a bit of a moment.

"But luckily the bill is not coming to me. It was a case of 'what have we got to lose' as if she wins or runs well at York we can go on from this."

She added: "Her work has been settled and she doesn't grab the bridle at home but as she showed in Ireland she does it on the track. At Naas, Rossa Ryan actually took a pull at the furlong pole when he was upside the eventual second.

"The form has worked out as the second Mauiewowie, who they said was Ger Lyons’s best two-year-old, won on Saturday and with the third Treasure Trove in second and they were well clear of the rest."

Lady Hollywood completed a hat-trick at Naas after wins at Lingfield and Beverley and her rating then rose 23lb to 103 after her Irish success.

Haynes added: "The key to supplementing her is the 3lb penalty that she gets from Dramatised and Mawj, which is a lot for fillies. We don't expect the Knavesmire preliminaries to be a problem to her, even though it can be a lot when you have to walk them across from the stables on the Tadcaster Road."

Haynes, who has 38 boxes at her Cadland Cottage yard and is also renting further space from Simon Pearce two doors away, does not think the step up in trip will be an issue.

She said: "Lady Hollywood is up to six furlongs for the first time but Naas is a very stiff five furlongs so we don't think that will be a problem and it's an easy six at York. The one thing we don’t want however is lots of rain as she's a fast-ground filly."
