Key day for the fillies as impressive Newbury winner Nashwa added to Oaks mix
The 2021 Flat season is well under way and it's Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas day while next month's Epsom Classics, the Cazoo Derby and Cazoo Oaks, are not too far away.
Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Classic Clues, our new series running every morning, has you covered.
Here's a recap of Saturday's action and how it's impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note today.
Racing round-up: Native Trail strikes in Ireland; Nashwa set for Epsom
A phenomenal year for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby continued at the Curragh on Saturday as Native Trail took the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas.
On Sunday it is the turn of the fillies to take centre stage with the likes of Tuesday, Homeless Songs and History lining up in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas (3.45). Tuesday is the solid favourite for the Guineas following her fine third behind Cachet in the English equivalent at the start of the month.
On Saturday morning, news emerged that Nashwa would be aimed at the Cazoo Oaks. The John and Thady Gosden-trained filly had the option of heading to France but is to step up to the mile-and-a-half distance for the Classic on June 4.
She was an impressive winner of the Listed Haras De Bouquetot Fillies' Trial Stakes at Newbury last time and is no bigger than 6-1 for the Classic.
Market movers
Cazoo Oaks
Nashwa 5-1 (from 11-2, bet365)
What they said:
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Nashwa's owner-breeder Imad Alsagar
"Nashwa won very well at Newbury last Saturday, where she showed a good turn foot. She's an exciting filly and we're looking forward to running her in the Oaks."
All eyes on . . . the Irish 1,000 Guineas
Ireland's top three-year-old fillies head to the Curragh for the Tattersalls 1,000 Guineas (3.45). Tuesday has only raced three times but could have much more to offer for the powerful Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore team.
History also runs for O'Brien while Homeless Songs was an impressive winner of her trial. The British challengers are made up of Mise En Scene and Purplepay.
