'JP McManus has been a huge support - it's nice to land him a payday like that'
Ben Haslam registered the highlight of his career on Sunday when Jerrysback's Summer Cup win headlined a 934-1 across-the-card treble, but on Monday the trainer was looking to the future and relishing building on his red-letter day.
All three horses were owned by Haslam's most high-profile owner JP McManus, with the 55-minute smash-and-grab netting £68,247.76 in winning prize-money and catapulting the trainer into the top ten in the championship standings.
Jerrysback won Uttoxeter's summer highlight under Richie McLernon at 33-1, before Jonjo O'Neill Jr guided Brelan D'As (4-1) and Dr Sanderson (9-2) to victory in back-to-back races at Cartmel.
"It wasn't too bad, was it?" Haslam told the Racing Post. "To have any winner for JP is always special. To get a treble up for him is extra special, especially with the class of race we were winning as well.
"All around it was a fantastic day, it's certainly my biggest jumps winner and the winners at Cartmel weren't too shabby either. It was a £40,000 handicap Dr Sanderson won, so it was a really good day."
The significance of all three horses being owned by McManus was not lost on Haslam, who added: "It's amazing. He's been a massive support to the yard throughout my training career so it's nice to land him a payday like that. It's important for us to do and hopefully he enjoyed watching them."
The trainer certainly enjoyed himself as well.
"Luckily Cartmel very kindly give a few bottles of champagne to the winning owner and trainer so we had a bit of a stab at that last night," he said.
As for plans, they remain undecided for his successful trio, but Haslam's dual licence means he also has his eye on some big handicaps on the Flat.
'He's one to look forward to'
He said: "We haven't decided what we'll do with Jerrysback yet, there are all sorts of options. We could possibly take him to Ireland for the Kerry National, but we'll see how he comes out the race and what the handicapper does.
"On the Flat we've a nice sprinter Fortamour, who could go to York at the end of July on his way to the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon in August. He's one to look forward to and if we can get him into the Ayr Gold Cup that'd be his target.
"We've a few two-year-olds starting to poke their heads above the parapet. They've placed on debut who we'd hope could go one better on their next start."
