Josephine Gordon gets a hand from Ryan Moore as she targets return from injury

Josephine Gordon has sought the advice of Ryan Moore on how to speed up the recovery from the recent hand injury that is keeping her out of next week's Newmarket July meeting.

The 25-year-old caught her hand on the side of the gate at Ayr when her mount Gnaad exited the stalls sideways in a 6f handicap on June 23 and subsequent x-rays revealed she had broken a bone in her left hand.

Gordon had her hand in a brace at a July meeting preview evening at the Quy Mill Hotel near Newmarket on Wednesday, when she gave an update on her injury.

She said: "I'm off to see the doctor on Friday and hopefully I could be back the week before Glorious Goodwood.

"I'm keeping myself fit in the gym and the injury isn't hurting, which is encouraging. I have my hand in a machine for three hours a day so hopefully that's helping."

On the circumstances of her injury, she added: "Gnaad jumped a bit awkwardly and I caught my hand on the side of the stalls. It wasn't a brilliant experience after that as I had been told to get a lead on the horse but I just couldn't hold him.

"The owners would have been cursing me when they saw me out clear, but these things happen."

Gordon, who became only the second female jockey to ride 100 winners in a season last year, is known for her strength in the saddle and has recently been to see three-time champion jockey Moore about her recovery.

She said: "Ryan suffered a hand injury when he was unseated in the stalls at Newmarket a few years ago and he was very helpful and gave me this rubber ball to squeeze, which was hard work!"

Gordon, who landed two Group 3 victories for her boss Hugo Palmer last year, has registered 26 winners this season and admits it is a bit frustrating to be missing out on more.

She said: "I've been away to the family in Devon for a few days to keep busy but I missed a few winners, like Humbert, who is a favourite of mine, at Newcastle.

"Hopefully I can make up for lost time when I get back."
