'It's funny how things go' - jocked-off jockey wins anyway on back-up ride
Wednesday: Yarmouth
Callum Hutchinson may have been jocked off a fancied runner in the 1m2f apprentice handicap but he had the last laugh when his back-up mount Franco Grasso prevailed after strong late market support.
The 5lb claimer is up against stiff competition for rides at Andrew Balding's yard, where he rubs shoulders with William Cox, Will Carver and now Harry Davies, but is working away to get outside rides.
Hutchinson was originally booked to ride Russian Virtue, who trailed in last, but lost that ride to rising star Benoit de la Sayette and said: "It's funny how things go."
The 11-8 market leader was available at 2-1 in the morning and was giving owners Fairlawns Racing a second win of the year.
The jockey added: "Franco Grasso did that well considering he wants further and some give in the ground."
Royal Ascot dreaming
John and Thady Gosden won the 6f novice stakes for the second year running with Faisal Road, who overcame a long wait in the stalls to see off favourite Changing Colours.
The runner-up was noisy in the paddock and was also a big noise in the ring at 4-5 but could not handle the winner, who was well ridden by Jack Mitchell and may now head to Royal Ascot.
The Newmarket pair haven't sent out many juvenile runners and the son of Kodiac had not had much experience of turf prior to his debut.
Thady Gosden said: "Faisal Road behaved well in the stalls and did that nicely. He'll come on a good bit for the experience and I expect he may well be a Coventry Stakes type for Royal Ascot."
Fine paid twice over
Gay Kelleway recently received a fine for using the watered gallop in Newmarket before its official opening time of 6am, but more than covered the fee when Mukha Magic kicked off a double for the trainer in the 1m6f handicap under Saffie Osborne.
The 7-1 chance was close up off a strong pace and scored easily by four and a half lengths.
Obsorne said: "Gay has been good to me lately and this fellow picked up well."
Hollie Doyle later steered Habanero Star home in the first division of the mile handicap to complete the Kelleway double and a brace of her own after earlier bagging the 6f restricted maiden on 4-6 chance Twelfth Knight.
Road woes
Saffie Osborne picked up a spare ride due to roadworks on the A11 dual carriageway, which caused serious delays for many.
Jockeys Neil Callan and Andrea Atzeni were forced to miss their rides at the track altogether, while Josephine Gordon was late.
Atzeni said: "It's really annoying as we allowed more time when we heard about the roadworks but they just shut the road for an hour when a car was trapped between two lorries. It look so long that we had no choice but to turn around and go back to Newmarket."
