Jamie Spencer and Rachael Blackmore in teams for Barney Curley Charity Cup
Frankie Dettori and Willie Mullins have revealed their star-studded teams of Flat and jump jockeys for the inaugural Barney Curley Charity Cup at Bellewstown on September 28.
Dettori has drafted in Classic-winning riders Jamie Spencer and Tom Queally, with title-chasing Billy Lee, Chris Hayes, Seamie Heffernan, Shane Kelly and Siobhan Rutledge completing his team of seven.
Mullins has Rachael Blackmore and three-time champion jockey Colin Keane in his side, along with Shane Foley, Wayne Lordan, Declan McDonagh, Dylan Browne McMonagle and Robert Whearty.
The teams will compete in two races, sponsored by Gannons City Recovery & Recycling Services Limited and the Gallagher Group, with points for the first eight home. Points will be awarded on a scale of 15, 12, ten, eight, seven, six, five and four.
The County Meath track is a fitting venue for the charity challenge, as it was the scene of Curley’s famous Yellow Sam coup in 1975. The challenge was launched to raise funds for Direct Aid for Africa, the charity set up by Curley in 1996 to support underprivileged people in Zambia.
Alan Delany, vice-chair of Bellewstown, said: “Frankie and Willie have assembled two amazing teams of riders and it should make for a brilliant raceday. This is the first of what Bellewstown hopes will become a special event on our fixture list in honour of our great friend Barney Curley and to support his wonderful charity.”
Dettori, who won the race run in memory of Curley at the track last September, is not holding back in his ambition to come out on top again.
He said: “I really want to win the inaugural Barney Curley Charity Cup and I've picked a team that will give us every chance. Jamie, Shane and Tom, all great friends of Barney, are travelling over from Britain especially for this event.
“Seamie Heffernan is one of the most experienced jockeys in the weighing room, while Billy and Chris are having great seasons. Siobhan is one of Ireland’s top apprentices and is hugely talented, so I’m confident we'll give Willie’s team a good run for their money.”
Mullins said: “The pressure is on the home team to win, so I’ve picked a very competitive team with a great spread of experience who all know what it takes to win.
"Bellewstown is Robert Whearty’s home racecourse, so it’s great to have that local knowledge on the team. Rachael and Colin are well used to breaking glass ceilings and Wayne, Declan, Shane and Dylan have been racking up the winners this year. We're going to give it our all."
