'It’s likely the losses are only lent' - our experts with four horses to follow

Fifth, Chepstow, Monday

Garry Clermont enjoyed a profitable time of it over hurdles last season, winning twice, including when giving 4lb to the useful Langer Dan at Ludlow in February, and it’s surely just a matter of time before this former point winner opens his account over fences.

This Jonjo O’Neill-trained five-year-old was upsides and laying down a strong challenge when almost unseating at the second-last on his chasing debut and seasonal return at Carlisle last month before rallying well to finish sixth.

He ran a lovely race under a considerate ride when beaten less than three lengths into fifth in a 2m handicap chase off 131 at Chepstow last week.

Hampered when a rival jumped across him at the last, he kept on pleasingly towards the finish under hands-and-heels riding and will surely pick up a similar prize on his favoured soft ground in the not too distant future. [Marcus Buckland]

St Barts
Second, Exeter, Wednesday

Plenty of promising young chasers were on show for this informative novice handicap and runner-up St Barts could be a horse worth following this winter.

Progressive over hurdles last season, the Phillip Hobbs-trained six-year-old has plenty of scope for improvement over fences and posted a highly encouraging debut effort.

Travelling strongly throughout, Richard Johnson’s mount was badly impeded three from home but impressed with his finishing kick to finish on the heels of the progressive and race-fit Ofalltheginjoints.

Despite jumping well in the main, St Barts tended to hang and jump left on occasions and this out-and-out stayer should be seen to better effect on a galloping left-handed track.

He’s entitled to take a big step forward from this seasonal reappearance and with both hurdle victories achieved in heavy ground, he’s capable of landing a decent pot in the coming months. [Olly Eden]

Third, Taunton, Thursday

There was plenty of money around for last month’s Newton Abbot bumper winner Onemorefortheroad ahead of his hurdling debut over 2m at Taunton on Thursday and it’s likely those losses are only lent.

The five-year-old had improved from race to race in bumpers, winning at the third attempt, but he again showed signs of inexperience at various stages of this hurdles debut, most notably when slowing dramatically coming to the second-last and losing all chance.

He rallied strongly under a sympathetic Bryony Frost ride on the run-in and ought to be capable of leaving this bare form behind on his next start, potentially over further. [Marcus Buckland]

Hazzaar
Fifth, Cheltenham, Friday

In a race packed with handicap debutants and unexposed hurdlers this should prove reliable form, and Hazzaar particularly caught the eye.

Trained by Venetia Williams last season, Hazzaar was sent off at short prices on all three starts but failed to live up to expectations in testing conditions and was subsequently allotted a lowly opening mark of 117.

Reappearing at Cheltenham having returned to Tom Lacey, Hazzaar briefly became outpaced as the pace quickened but stayed on powerfully up the hill to almost snatch fourth.

Lightly raced and open to improvement, he should come on plenty for this first outing after a 261-day break, while stepping back up in trip ought to suit. [Olly Eden]
