Ryan's rides: assessing top jockey Moore's four chances as he heads to Listowel for the first time
Ryan Moore has four rides at Listowel today on his maiden visit to the track. Here, we assess his chances . . .
Thrice
Race: Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, 7f (2.20)
Lesser fancied of the Aidan O'Brien-trained pair when making his debut at the Curragh last month but emerged with plenty of credit, going down by three-quarters of a length after taking time to hit top stride.
This well-bred son of Wootton Bassett gets the services of Ryan Moore this time and should take a big step forward, while he will have no worries stepping up in trip in the future.
Spotlight comment: Got no cover at the Curragh but still ran on well to be beaten under a length into third
Mundi
Race: Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes (Listed), 1m1f
Very well related, being a brother to four winners including dual Guineas hero Churchill, this big, strong-looking colt looked full of potential when making a winning debut at Dundalk in April.
He possibly didn't handle the ground when well beaten by stablemate Chief Little Hawk in the Group 3 Gallinule Stakes, while he then raced three wide and went even wider turning for home down in distance in the Listed Celebration Stakes when last seen in June.
He gave himself plenty to do in a race that turned into a sprint and was only beginning to make ground up late, giving the impression this extra furlong would suit.
He's still unexposed after three starts and could have more to offer if better for an 86-day break.
Spotlight comment: Never well positioned in a Listed race last time; back from a break and still unexposed
Medici Venus
Race: MAC Hardware & Farm Supplies Irish EBF Rated Race, 1m
Bought for $550,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale, the daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner Tiz The Law has posted progressive Racing Post Ratings with each start.
She still looked a touch green when beaten a short-head at Galway two weeks ago but might have won in another stride and can pick up a race of this nature.
She could improve for the extra furlong, given she's related to a couple of winners at 1m-1m2f, and Ryan Moore is now on board for the first time.
Spotlight comment: Touched off by a well-regarded sort last time, goes up in trip, has to be considered
Emphasis
Race: Jet, Peggy & Eamonn O'Carroll Memorial Handicap, 1m6½f
Made a winning three-year-old debut in a maiden at Killarney in July, and the form has been franked with subsequent wins from the runner-up and the fourth.
He couldn't make an impact stepped up to this trip last time, but this is far easier than that Listed contest and there's hope he'll stay as his dam was a Listed winner at the distance.
The RPR of 91 he achieved for his maiden success makes him look potentially well treated off a mark of 82 on his handicap debut.
Spotlight comment: Killarney maiden winner, form is solid, could be well treated and this easier than latest
