Graham Lee Galway fundraiser raises more than €100,000
Galway chief executive Michael Moloney said he was overwhelmed by the support of the people who helped raise more than €100,000 for Graham Lee at the track's summer festival ball in August.
Lee suffered spinal injuries following a fall at Newcastle last November and the ball was organised to allow people to show their support. The occasion raised €92,172 and a further donation of €11,686 from the Tote for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund brought the total to €103,858.
Five hundred guests attended from across the racing and local business community at the ball at the Galmont Hotel on the Saturday night of race week and Moloney said: "We are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by everyone who attended and contributed to this event. The funds raised will make a significant difference not only in Graham's life but also in supporting the welfare of jockeys via the Injured Jockeys Fund.
"Our event showcased the best of our local community here in Galway and the racing industry at large – the camaraderie, passion, and willingness to support one of our own was phenomenal."
He added: "Graham has been a remarkable figure in the world of racing, showcasing dedication, talent, and sportsmanship throughout his career. Our Summer Festival Ball gave us and people that know Graham and his family, the opportunity to give back to someone who has given so much to the sport we cherish."
