Trainer John O'Shea charged after Group 2 winner tests positive for crystal meth
Leading Sydney trainer John O'Shea has been charged by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) after one of his horses tested positive for the recreational crystal meth.
Pretty In Pink returned a positive swab for the substance after winning the Group 2 Moreton Cup at Doomben in June last year.
QRIC commissioner Ross Barnett confirmed Pretty In Pink's positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine in a statement on Thursday.
O'Shea has been asked to make submissions and an inquiry is expected to be held soon.
It is not the first time a horse has returned a positive for a recreational drug in Australia.
In 2005, Gai Waterhouse was fined A$15,000 (£8,250/€9,200) by Racing NSW stewards after her horse, Love You Honey, tested positive for cocaine.
Victorian trainer Matt Laurie escaped a penalty when one of his horses tested positive for ice in 2015.
The stewards found it was accidental contamination by a stable employee who was using the drug, and the amount transferred to the horse was too small to impact its performance.
