Toimy Son scores impressive win to set up Royal Ascot raid for Yann Barberot
Sunday: Longchamp
Toimy Son earned himself and his numerous followers a trip to Royal Ascot when coming from well off a strong pace to run down Txope in the Listed Prix du Pont Neuf.
Highly tried at two, the Twilight Son colt took a step forward on his comeback effort at Saint-Cloud and looks to be something of a seven-furlong specialist.
Trainer Yann Barberot came away with a valuable victory from the All-Weather Championships at Newcastle last month and now has an even bigger prize in his sights.
"We'll aim him at the Jersey Stakes," said Barberot. "There aren't too many options at this trip unless we want to take on the older horses.
"He's effective over 1,600 metres [a mile] but is built like a speed horse, small and strong. He perhaps lacks a bit of size for a miler."
Grand Glory continued to repay her new owner's decision to keep her in training at the age of six with a performance full of authority in the Group 3 Prix Allez France, pulling an easy three and a half lengths clear of Burgarita under Cristian Demuro.
Trainer Gianluca Bietolini was in no hurry to name future targets but is clearly savouring every unexpected moment he gets to enjoy with his stable star.
"Everything has gone really well this season and she had shown us all the signs she was ready to go again," said Bietolini. "We were a bit worried today might turn into a false race and fortunately the two German fillies injected some pace.
"Cristian sat in behind Monsieur Fabre's horse [Burgarita] and it worked out very well."
Stephane Wattel already has one major date to look forward to when Rosacea runs in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches in a fortnight's time and he could have some big days ahead in staying contests after The Good Man made his first attempt at just shy of two miles a winning one in the Group 3 Prix de Barbeville, just getting the better of Bubble Smart and Joie De Soir.
"He travelled really well and was able to relax, which was important on his first try at this trip," said Wattel. "Now he has passed this test there's a logical programme to follow but we'll need to see how he comes out of this first.
"A lot of the credit goes to my second jockey Morgan Delalande, who rides him every morning. He's a much more relaxed horse now."
