Better than No Nay Never and Lady Aurelia: Campanelle workout blows Ward away

Queen Mary winner Campanelle has been dazzling since returning to America, with her latest gallop more impressive than those posted by No Nay Never and Lady Aurelia at the same point of their careers.

The daughter of Kodiac powered home to give her trainer Wesley Ward a fourth win in the Royal Ascot Group 2 and has produced more than expected at home in her workouts since.

"Campanelle worked a little quicker than I would have liked," said Ward. "But as a two-year-old, fresh, and coming off a nice win, she just kicked around there and it was an eyeopening breeze. I wasn't looking for something like that, but she gave it to us anyway.

"Of any horse I've brought back over to work after Ascot –Hootenanny, No Nay Never, and Lady Aurelia – Campanelle's work today was probably more impressive than theirs. It was visually amazing. It wasn't just me who thought that. Everyone who was watching the work was thinking the same thing."

The form of the Queen Mary has worked out well, with five winners already emerging from the Royal Ascot race.

Fourth-placed Sardinia Sunset won the Listed Marygate Fillies' Stakes at York this month, with fifth Happy Romance a good winner of the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury on Sunday.

Jessica Harrington's Queen Mary tenth Dickiedooda reversed Ascot form with seventh Grammata to win the Listed Coolmore Caravaggio Tipperary Stakes at Cork, while Caroline Dale (third) and Star Of Emaraaty (11th) have also been successful in novice events since the royal meeting.

Although Ward has not indicated a firm target for Campanelle, there is expectation she can go on to greater things, with the trainer hinting her future may lie over further too.

Ward added: "She has a big, long reach to her and a big stride, and she's going to get further than three-quarters of a mile."
