More turmoil for Godolphin as Australia boss resigns
The managing director of Godolphin in Australia is the latest high-profile figure to leave the organisation, amid an inquiry into failure to report a case of strangles.
Henry Plumptre, who worked for Godolphin for 16 years, stated the issue has impacted the organisation's reputation, with the inquiry scheduled to continue on August 4.
Godolphin’s former head trainer John O’Shea, who stepped down in April, denied he was told of the diagnosis last August at the initial hearing, following which stewards adjourned the inquiry to study phone records.
Plumptre said: “I have been away for a short period overseas and have had time to reflect on the ongoing issue of strangles that was reported to Racing NSW stewards two months ago.
“In view of the fundamental failure to report the issue at the time, it is the best option for Godolphin if I stand down.
“The reputation and integrity of Godolphin is the most important aspect of what we do and this issue has impacted on that reputation. I have worked with some amazing people and horses over the last sixteen years at Godolphin and I thank them for all their hard work and dedication.”
Joe Osborne, group chief executive of Godolphin, thanked Plumptre for his service to the organisation – with plans for a new managing director of Godolphin in Australia to be announced in the near future.
Osborne said: “On behalf of Godolphin I wish to express our appreciation to Henry for the role he has played in the building of the Darley and Godolphin brands in Australia. He has shown great leadership on important industry issues.”
In June Godolphin's chief executive John Ferguson resigned after the Racing Post revealed the damaging extent of Bin Suroor's feud with Ferguson, then Sheikh Mohammed's closest aide.
